Organizations focused on election integrity today asked a federal judge to avoid requiring paperless e-voting machines as the remedy for a lawsuit challenging the use of punch card and optical scan systems in Ohio.

Former Riverside County Board of Supervisors candidate Linda Soubirous, national election integrity organization VerifiedVoting.org, and a bi-partisan pair of Riverside County voters today sued Riverside County and its Registrar of Voters Mischelle Townsend because the county refused to conduct a proper recount of a March 2004 election with a razor-thin margin. The Soubirous lawsuit could guarantee public access to security records stored inside electronic voting machines in future recounts.

The grassroots movement for election integrity will take a leap forward this Tuesday, July 13, when supporters of voter-verified paper ballots (VVPBs) rally in 24 cities nationwide. Attendees at this nationwide "Computer Ate My Vote" day of action will present petitions favoring VVPBs and ask state election officials to sign a Pledge for Election Integrity.
