NPR's Alex Chadwick chats with Ira Flatow, host of NPR's Talk of the Nation Science Friday, about the merits and demerits of electronic voting systems. This segment contains a spectacular misstatement by Ira Flatow, who remarks "There is an effort since the voting act of 2002 which mandated that we have to get rid of all of these paper ballots."

	This is a segment is just under 4 minutes in length. It describes the problems encountered with the AVS WinVote touch screen systems that were used in the November 4, 2003 election in Fairfax County, Virginia. To view this segment, you will first go to a CBS news page that contains a written transcript of the program. Then, when you get to that CBS news page, you will click on their link for "The Kinks of Electronic Voting" (that link will appear on the left side of that page, just above a photo of a touch screen voting machine). You will need to have the Real Video or Windows media player installed on your computer and linked to your browser, and you may have to sit through a brief (18 second) online commercial for WalMart before the CBS news video appears on your screen. This CBS segment is the first case that we are aware of where a major TV network has provided detailed coverage on the electronic voting controversy on their evening news. This segment is also a great introduction to the problem of electronic voting. Please share it with your friends, family, and colleagues.

Activists have been trying to drum up opposition to electronic voting systems, which they say are insecure and plagued with technical problems. NPR's Rick Karr reports.

Presentation is by Prof. Dan Wallach and Prof. Doug Jones. When the Georgia state government adopted electronic voting, it established itself as a leader in the technology of democracy. Recently, however, questions have emerged over the Diebold voting system used across the state. Last summer, university researchers published a report claiming that the voting system is "far below even the most minimal security standards applicable in other contexts." A later Diebold analysis claimed to refute those criticisms, while a report by SAIC drew mixed conclusions. The state of Maryland recently chose to adopt the Diebold technology. This event offers computer scientists, public officials, and industry representatives an opportunity to present their analyses to the Georgia public. It offers a neutral, academic setting for a fact-based discussion of what has become a contentious issue.

It illustrates how elections officials have become pitchmen (or in this case, pitchwomen) for the vendors of electronic voting machines. To view this segment, you will first go to the Hart Intercivic video index page, which will immediately start to show you a video of David Hart, chairman of Hart Intercivic, pitching the eSlate voting machine; his pitch lasts about 100 seconds. You can watch David Hart if you like, but as soon as you are ready to see the testimonial from the County Clerk, look for the series of links to the right of the video and click on the link titled "Customer Testimonial". On the same link as above there is a demonstration of how the eSlate works.

Note: Some of our video files are in a format called ".vp3". These anticipate opening with the Apple Quicktime Video Player, which can be downloaded here. When you try and open it the first time with QuickTime player it should say it doesn't have the correct codec and check the Apple site for it, find it, and ask you if you want to update your player. Say yes, and it will update with the new codec, then try opening the video again and it should work.
