Dear Representative ,
I want my vote to count in the next election, along with yours and every other American's. But I'm not confident that it will.
Experts tell us the most popular voting machines are not secure against fraud and error. Courts don't allow the software to be inspected. People who are not computer experts decide the machines that will be used in each state. Some machines are not tested thoroughly, and even thorough testing can't reveal software errors or malicious programs that could subvert an election.
We need election systems that allow voters to make sure their ballot reflects their vote, and we need a paper audit trail so that recounts can be more than just an electronic re-tabulation of the same electronic information.
I respectfully urge you to take action to pass H.R. 2239, the Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act. While HAVA does much to safeguard the election system in the United States, it does not do enough to protect our democracy. H.R. 2239 would provide the necessary safeguards.
Since you are in the Committee on House Administration, please work toward getting this bill out of committee on the House floor for a vote. Then please vote for the bill and encourage other representatives to vote for it also. We need to know that voting will be secure and fair in all our states.
Our democracy depends on fair and accurate elections. Please do not delay.
Thank you,
