Don’t we swell with pride that our country is a democracy! It means that we, as eligible voters, have a voice in our government through our vote. But, where is our democracy if some votes are counted and others are not? Could our democracy disappear?

Right now, voting, the very process by which democracy works, is threatened by electronic touch screen voting machines that don’t permit verification of each person’s vote. If votes can’t be verified no one can know if the votes have been meddled with.

After the last presidential election when votes were lost or not counted in Florida, counties over the whole country were required to update their voting procedures. Many states are buying touch screen machines, which don’t permit a review of the electronic code to check for possible errors, or an independent recount. Some of the machines already used were found to have given questionable results.

So, how can we make sure our democracy is safe from vote count fraud?

We can tell our federal representatives and senators to support Representative Russ Holt‘s bill, HR2239, that requires that the electronic code can be examined by election officials, and that a paper audit trail be used.
